Distribution: Occurring in scattered locations west of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east across North America to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Wastelots, roadsides, and other disturbed areas.

Flowers: June-July

Origin: Introduced from Europe

Growth Duration: Annual

Conservation Status: Not of concern

Description:
General:

Glabrous annual 1-7 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Leaves opposite, sessile and somewhat clasping, the lower oblanceolate, becoming lanceolate above, 2-5 cm. long and 0.5-1.5 cm. wide.

Flowers:

Flowers several to many in a flat-topped inflorescence; calyx narrowly tubular, 5-lobed, 13-17 mm. long, 10-nerved, glabrous; petals 5, pink, the claw 6-8 mm. long, the blade obovate, truncate, 4-7 mm. long; blade appendages 2, linear, 2-3 mm. long; stamens 10, styles 3.

Fruits:

Capsule 3-celled.
